Fourth GOP candidate enters race to replace Hefley
Contributed on-cycle by The Gazette of Colorado Springs. COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) – A fourth Republican candidate on Tuesday said he will enter the race to replace longtime U.S. Rep. Joel Hefley who last week said he will retire.
Former El Paso County Commissioner Duncan Bremer, a 62-year-old lawyer from the Monument area, said he’ll start his campaign next week for the 5th Congressional District held by the fellow Colorado Republican.
Former El Paso County Sheriff John Anderson had for weeks been the lone GOP candidate before state Sen. Doug Lamborn and former administrative director for Hefley, Jeff Crank, on Monday told The Gazette they’re running.
The six-county district is heavily Republican and conservative with the winner of the GOP primary all but assured of winning the seat and a long-term tenure in Congress, political analysts have said.
Jay Fawcett, a former Air Force Academy professor and Gulf War veteran, is the lone Democrat in the race to replace Hefley, who was elected to the U.S. House in 1987 and said he wouldn’t seek an 11th term.
Others mentioned in what could be a long list of candidates include Colorado Springs Mayor Lionel Rivera and City Councilman Darryl Glenn.
